HOMILY OF TUESDAY AFTER PENTECOST: YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: SALT AND LIGHT

BY: Fr. Paul Karabari

2 Cor 1:18-22; Psalm 119:119-135; Matt 5:13-16

‘You are the salt of the earth…You are the light of the world.’

Every Christian is called by God to be world-changer; to have influence on the world around them. To go against the status quo and encourage others to do good too. We are supposed to stand out. The Bible says: ‘Do not conform to the pattern of this world’ (Romans 12:2 ).

In the Gospel of today (Matt. 5:13-16), Jesus used the illustrations of salt and light. Both salt and light have properties which affect things around them. Salt is used as a preservative, and to enhance flavour. If you are a follower of Jesus living the beatitudes, you matter. You have an important role to play because you are the salt of the earth. Christians help preserve what is good in the culture. In the ancient world, salt was very valuable: the Greeks thought it contained something almost divine, and the Romans sometimes paid their soldiers with salt. A soldier who didn’t carry out his duties “was not worth his salt.” You are a seasoning agent. In a sense, you can bring the distinctive flavour of God’s values to all of life. You can make life palatable. Light dispels darkness. It represents awareness, knowledge, and understanding. Light can’t be hidden. You don’t bury the gifts you have. Jesus said, ‘You shall know them by their fruits’ (Matthew 7:16).

The only thing that can threaten salt is sitting in a shaker so long that it gets damp, loses its flavour, and can’t be sprinkled. The word ‘flavour’ means to enrich. We are to make every life we encounter and our society better. We ought to carry value-addition. Don’t get to meet people and make their lives miserable.

Instead of isolating yourself from the world, you are supposed to illuminate it. Darkness is not a threat to light; it is where the light does its best work. Darkness is only effective in the absence of light.

The word gospel means ‘the good news’. In a world of increasing despair, we are called to bring the light of the gospel to those living in spiritual darkness. We have to be the salt and light of the world.

Significantly, we are not to be salt and light ‘in the’ but ‘of the’ world. If the world has a property that makes it to produce darkness. We are called to take over the property so that the world may produce light. In other words, in the world around you, be the light people see, not their darkness.

But being a Christian in the world is not only about doing good things and acting in a Christlike way, it also means joining God in His mission to transform people and situations. God is a God of exchange. He loves to make broken people whole, despondent people hopeful, and unhappy people joyful. And we can help Him do this.

You are here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavours of this earth. God is not a secret to be kept. Have you ever been seen as an answer to someone’s prayer? So let us make a difference and transform society. Let us be the salt and let us be the light. GOD IS STILL ON THE THRONE. May God have mercy on us, heal our country Nigeria, bless and protect us all through Christ Our Lord Amen. Good morning
