HOMILY OF WEDNESDAY 10TH WEEK OF THE ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: GOD IS SUPREME

BY: Fr. Karabari Paul

‘….that this people may know that you, O Lord, are God, and that you have turned their hearts back.’

The Reading of today (1Kgs 18:20-39) shows one of the greatest manifestations of God in the Old Testament. Yahweh God works His wonder before the people of Israel. This is not to frighten or entertain them as we do today but to “turn back their hearts to Him”.

The Prophet Elijah asks the people, “How long will you follow two ways at the same time?” (18:21). This question is still relevant in our days. This is because like the people of Israel, we don’t see clearly the difference between Baal and God. We consider them as two powers. Baal in our lives could be any alternative we create in place of God; material or spiritual. Elijah forces the people to make a choice, just as in the New Testament the believers are also asked to make a committed choice either to serve God or Mammon (Mt 6:24), to take sides for or against Jesus (Mtt 12: 30), to be either fervent or cold (Rev 3:16). And each day we wake up, without being forced, we have to make a choice on whose sides we belong. God doesn’t allow us to be mere passive spectators.

The victory at Carmel is Yahweh’s victory. The people once again come to recognize the supremacy of God, and reaffirm their loyalty to Him. It is clearly shown again that you have a thousand on your side doesn’t mean you are doing the right thing or you can always win. And no matter how many you are, you can’t battle against God. You don’t need everyone to stand with you. To fight to have the approval of every man is a futile endeavour. God is enough. And when you stand on His side, he defends His name. GOD IS STILL ON THE THRONE. May God have mercy on us, heal our world, bless and protect us all through Christ, our Lord Amen. Please, stay safe. Good morning
