HOMILY OF WEDNESDAY WITHIN EASTER OCTAVE — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “THEY RECOGNIZED JESUS IN THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Acts 3:1-10, Psalm 105, Luke 24:13-35

Jesus’ mission of regathering his scattered disciples was a necessary task and a process. He did not only alley their fears, he also catechized them on the import of his passion, death and resurrection. Once they were convinced, nothing could stop their witness. That witness was by word and proclamation and also by deed, putting into action the teachings of the master. God confirmed their witness with mighty deeds as in the healing of the crippled man in today’s first reading. The power that Jesus granted to them when he missioned them to proclaim the good news was fully on display.

More importantly, the Eucharistic context of the encounter of the disciples on the way to Emmaus reminds us that in the Eucharist, we encounter the risen Christ as the same Jesus who gave himself at the Last Supper and sealed that gift with his death on the Cross. Our Eucharistic encounter is fuller and more enriching when we open our hearts to his word and presence, so that he may stay with us and make himself known. Encounters with Jesus are transformative and prompt responses. Mission was the proper response of the two disciples as they got up immediately, not minding the darkness of the night in which they now walk in the light of Christ, to proclaim that Jesus has risen and they have seen him. Like the disciples, we invite Jesus to stay with us when we receive him at every Mass. That is how communion comes about. May our communion with bring us to deeper knowledge of his love, joy and peace.

Lord, journey with us on the path of life, especially through difficulties, doubt and challenges. Amen.
