HOMILY ON 18TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: JESUS—THE BREAD OF LIFE

Exodus 16:2-4, 12-15; Ephesians 4:17, 20-24; John 6:24-35
Pope Benedict XVI, in his encyclical letter, Spe Salvi (Saved in/by Hope), said, “Man was created for greatness—for God himself; he was created to be filled by God. But his heart is too small for the greatness to which it is destined. It must be stretched…”
How often do we recognize and believe in the greatest gift of God we’ve received in the Holy Eucharist – bringing us into a communion with God and making us sharers in His life? Oftentimes, we receive our Lord with hearts struggling with doubts and contempt toward the greatness that we’re made of and are made for in Jesus Christ. Sometimes, we look at this great gift and ask, “What is this?” Or wish there is something else that can give us life and respond to our life’s ultimate concerns.

The truth is that we can not rely on our human thoughts in responding to such. We need to go to the One who said to us, “I Am the Bread of Life.” For He never leaves us helpless in our doubts, worries, and contempts; but reaches out to generous hearts open to Him, so that by experiencing Him and believing in Him, we might fall in love and hunger for Him who alone can satisfy us; and thirst for Him who alone can quench our thirsts. The heart that has encountered our Lord would ask for more of Him, who by His gift of himself offers us eternal life. He’s the Bread of Life, in whom our greatness is realized. Not in perishable things, but in the imperishable gift of God in Christ Jesus.
