HOMILY FOR SATURDAY OF THE FIRST WEEK OF ADVENT YEAR B.

HOMILY THEME: ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IN THE WORK OF SALVATION

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Mt. 9:35-10:8)
In the day’s Gospel Jesus saw the need for laborers in the vineyard of the Lord. The sight of the crowd was too much for Jesus. They were sick, hungry for the Word of God, and very much in need of enlightenment and conversion. Jesus appealed to the disciples to ask the master, God, to send laborers for the abundant harvest.

It will be simplistic to interpret this as merely a call to the priesthood, sisterhood, and lay volunteers. It is actually a call to all baptized. All of us incorporated to the faith and received the gift of new life by virtue of the saving action of the Lord Jesus are tasked to be laborers for the Kingdom. While we have ourselves to sanctify, we also share the responsibility of helping others be sanctified.

But we must never forget that all of these are done with the grace of God. We should remind ourselves that it is not our personal mission. As laborers, we are not the owners of the field. God is the owner and wants us to participate in His work of salvation.

We can also sense here God’s love and concern for us. The Gospel writer showed Jesus as being moved with pity with what He saw. The pity was just too much that He wanted it to be addressed. Thus, we ought to encourage everyone to be laborers too! We are our brother’s keeper. We begin with ourselves. Hopefully, we influence and inspire others to conversion.
