HOMILY FOR SATURDAY OF THE THIRTY-THIRD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A.

HOMILY THEME: MY GOD IS NOT DEAD

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:
(Lk. 20:27-40)
In the day’s Gospel was given a hard question by the Sadducees on the truth of the resurrection. It was customary for brothers to marry their sister-in-law in the event that their brother- husband died childless. Of the seven brothers who married the sister in law, Jesus was asked who will stand as husband to the wife. Jesus’ answer was, marriage will not anymore be a concern in the next life. As children of God, the only relationship is with God. Jesus reminded them of Moses’ pronouncement when God appeared to him in the burning bush, “Lord, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob; and he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.” Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob may have died but they continue to live to worship the living God.

Can you imagine a God ruling over the dead? He will be a good for nothing god. Many, if not all, would not want to be that god. Our God reigns and, in Jesus Christ, He showed that death is not the end of life. Death is part of life. It is the door to the Kingdom. God revealed to us, in Jesus Christ, that the life He shared to us is eternal.

But there is also eternal death. It is an existence rejecting God’s love and electing disobedience to God. After our life on earth, we face judgment before God. If we are found worthy, we enter eternal life with God. When we are not yet worthy, He gives us a chance to be cleansed by repentance. When we decide to totally reject God, we enter eternal death.

Life is so precious. It’s meaning and purpose are beyond us. Life is fulfilled not here on earth but in the life to come.
