HOMILY FOR SATURDAY OF THE THIRD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: YAHWEH SEES

BY: Rev. Fr Livinus Igbodekwe

HOMILY:

One of the errors of the human mind is thinking God to be with certain limitations in knowledge. We humans don’t know what we don’t see because we can’t see all things all the time but God sees all things all the time. This error of human thinking makes man think that he has a hideout in which the eyes of God don’t reach. We steal, fornicate, covet at lonely hours of our life when no one except us and our accomplices are around.

David made the same error by thinking he has gotten Scot free with his double crime against Uriah. He felt no remorse. Or he may have felt little, an imperfect contrition of which he thinks that open confession was not necessary. God had to send his prophet, Nathan to call back his sickening conscience.

But, during these nine months, we may well suppose his comforts and the exercises of his graces suspended, and his communion with God interrupted; during all that time, it is certain, he penned no psalms, his harp was out of tune, and his soul like a tree in winter, that has life in the root only. Therefore, after Nathan had been with him, he prays, Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and open thou my lips, Psalms 51:12.

Marriage is a remedy against fornication, but marrying many is not; for, when once the law of unity is transgressed, the indulged lust will hardly stint itself. Uriah, like the poor man, had only one wife, who was to him as his own soul, and always lay in his bosom, for he had no other, he desired no other, to lie there.

The parable represents God’s interpretation of our deeds of injustice. God’s wrath visits the one who sees power as an opportunity to oppress the poor.

Until we confess our sins and feel sorrow for them we still have to face the wrath of God but when we confess, though we have to do a little penance, we regain our peace with God.

Dear friend, are you still thinking that God takes no notice of your secret sins? You call them “secret” while before God they are open. Approach the Lord in confession rather than allowing the wrath of God approach you before you do.

I wish you a blessed Saturday!
