HOMILY/SERMON FOR 19TH FRIDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: HUSBAND AND WIFE ARE NO LONGER TWO, BUT ONE BODY
BY: Fr Deotacious Chikontwe SMA
Ezekiel 16:1-15,60,63, Psalm Isaiah 12, Matthew 19:3-12
FROM OUR FIRST READING
In our first reading, Ezekiel describes Israel as an unfaithful wife. This image shows how Israel turned away from God, seeking other gods and breaking their special relationship with Him. This unfaithfulness caused much pain and distance between Israel and God.
Despite Israel’s betrayal, God remains faithful. He promises to remember His covenant and restore His people. This reminds us that God does not abandon us, even when we fail Him. His loyalty is unwavering, showing us the depth of His love.

FROM OUR GOSPEL READING
The gospel reading of today has two important teachings;
1. Firstly, Jesus teaches that marriage is a lasting commitment blessed by God. He explains that from the beginning, God intended marriage to be a union that should not be broken.
Jesus acknowledges that marriage can be difficult. He understands that not everyone can accept His teaching on marriage, but He stresses its serious nature. This helps us see that marriage is not just a human agreement but a sacred bond in God’s eyes.
2. Secondly, Jesus speaks about those who remain unmarried for the sake of God’s Kingdom. This teaching highlights a special calling and devotion to God for those who are single.
Being single for God’s Kingdom means dedicating oneself fully to God’s service. This vocation is not about being alone but about having a unique relationship with God and a special role in His plan. Jesus recognizes this as a valuable and important path.
CONCLUSION
Dear brethrens, we too, often turn away from God in our daily lives. We may get distracted by other things or choose paths that lead us away from Him. Reflecting on Ezekiel’s message, we are called to recognize our own unfaithfulness and seek to return to God, knowing that He is always ready to welcome us back.
May God bless you all through Christ our Lord.
