HOMILY/SERMON FOR 1ST TUESDAY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: UNLIKE THE SCRIBES, HE TEACHES WITH AUTHORITY

BY: Fr Francis Onwunali

Heb 2:5-12; Psalm 8:2, 5-9; Mark 1:21-28

The theme explicitly and implicitly running through the readings of today is the authority of the Word of God, which has the power to liberate. God’s word is not passive but active and alive!
In the first reading (Heb 2: 5-12), the author of the Letter to the Hebrews explains the mystery of the Incarnation for the purpose of human redemption through the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus. For this reason, “the one who sanctifies, and the ones sanctified, are now of the same stock; that is why He openly calls them brothers…”.

In the gospel (Mark 1: 21-28), Jesus, unlike the scribes, taught the people in the Synagogue with authority, and it had a remarkable impact in their lives. With the same authority, Jesus sets free a man possessed by an unclean spirit. In Him and through Him, all things came to be.
Dear friends, do you believe that God’s word has the power to set you free and transform your life? Unlike the scribes and prophets who spoke appealing to other authorities to support their statements – “Thus says the Lord”; when Jesus speaks, He needs no authority to back His statement, He is authority incarnate- the Word of God that took flesh. When He speaks, God speaks!
I pray that as we journey in life today, we will be open so that the Word of God can order our lives and freely destroy all that is not of God in us. Lord, may we never doubt your love and mercy, and the power of your word that sets us free, bringing healing and restoration to our body, mind, heart, soul, and spirit. Let us be still and know that you are God (Ps. 46:10). Have a day full of the freedom of God’s children!
