HOMILY/SERMON FOR 27TH THURSDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: PERSISTENT PRAYERS
BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa
Gal 3: 1 – 5, Lk 11: 5 – 13
One of the greatest spiritual challenges today is a lack of persistence in prayer. We often abandon our prayers if our requests are not fulfilled immediately. True prayer, however, requires patience, perseverance, and determination.

For instance:
– Abraham persistently pleaded for mercy on the people of Sodom (Genesis 18:16-33).
– Hannah consistently prayed for a child and went to the temple seeking this gift (1 Samuel 1).
– Elijah patiently prayed for rain until it finally came (1 Kings 18).
– Cornelius was known as a man of constant, consistent prayer (Acts 10:2-4).
Jesus provides a beautiful example of persistence in prayer in a parable about a person who visited his friend at midnight to ask for three loaves of bread for a guest who had just arrived after a long journey. The friend initially refused, giving strong complaints: “Do not bother me”; “The door is now shut, and my children are in bed with me”; “I cannot get up and give you anything.” Despite these responses, the man in need was persistent, refusing to take “no” for an answer. He kept knocking until the door was finally opened.
A life of persistent prayer is not merely an empty routine or a list of requests. Instead, it strengthens our faith, promotes personal growth, and deepens our relationships with God and others.
Do we pray frequently, consistently, and with perseverance?
