HOMILY/SERMON FOR 6TH SUNDAY IN EASTER — YEAR C

HOMILY THEME: DO NOT LET YOUR HEART BE TROUBLED

Acts 15,1-2,22-29; Revelation 21,10-14, 22-23; John 14, 23-29

If we have ever lost a loved one, we know what this kind of permanent separation is like. We can only imagine the feeling of losing one who was perfect, whose fellowship was so pure, and whose love was so flawless. It must have been an excruciating and horrifying pain.

We live with conflict, disappointment and pain. We all experience hours of deep tragedy and times of severe trial, but God is with us. Whatever be our challenge, whatever mess we are in, whatever perplexity or anxiety we have, let us remember, the lord himself is there. In a way, it is better than if he were visible, because he is not hindered by the limitations of a physical body. He can be wherever we need him. While he was here on earth, he could be in only one place at a time. Now he’s available, accessible and approachable to all believers everywhere.

Do we know the peace which passes all understanding (Phil.4:7)? In his farewell discourse Jesus grants peace as his gift to his disciples. What kind of peace does he offer? The peace of Christ is more than the absence of trouble. It includes everything which makes for our highest good. The world’s approach to peace is avoidance of trouble and a refusal to face unpleasant things. Jesus offers the peace which conquers our fears and anxieties. Nothing can take us from the peace and joy of Jesus Christ. No sorrow or grief, no danger, no suffering can make it less.

Jesus also speaks of his destination and ultimate triumph over the powers of evil in the world. In the eyes of the world the cross stood for shame, humiliation, and defeat. Jesus went to the cross knowing that it would lead to victory over the powers of sin and of Satan. Jesus also knew that he would return to his Father in glory. The cross brought glory to Jesus and to the Father and it is our way to glory as well. In the Cross of Christ we find true peace and reconciliation with God. Do we live in the peace of Jesus Christ?

There are three ways to get ourselves exonerated from both physical and spiritual troubles and embrace lasting peace :

1. Trust God’s presence

2. Trusting God’s promises.

3. Trusting God’s person

The issue isn’t whether or not God is speaking; it’s whether we will have ears to hear what he says and hearts to enable us to listen to what we hear. He is saying, “Do not be afraid.”

PRAYER: Lord, may your peace be always with us. May no circumstance, trouble, or vexation rob us of the peace which passes all understanding. You, alone, O Lord, are our Peace. May we always reside in that peace by believing your word and by doing your will. Amen
