HOMILY/SERMON FOR THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD — YEAR C

HOMILY THEME: “BY BAPTISM WE BECOME SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF GOD”

BY: Fr Francis Onwunali

Isaiah 40:1-5,9-11/ Titus 2:11-17; 3:4-7/Luke 3:15-16,21-22

Today, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. With this celebration, we liturgically come to the end of Christmas tide. The mystery about the identity of the Messiah which has been concealed to the public is today unsealed and made known: that Jesus is the beloved Son of God in Whom God is well pleased.

In the gospel, Luke gives account of Jesus’ baptism by John (Lk 3: 15-16, 21-22). Though He didn’t need baptism since He is without sin, He, however, humbly asked for it for our sake. Through His baptism, Jesus made holy the water of baptism and initiated our redemptive process so that all who believe and are baptized in Him are open to salvation.
In the second reading (Titus 2: 11-14; 3: 4-7), Paul reminds Titus (and us) that God has saved us by the cleansing water of baptism, giving us new birth and new life with the Holy Spirit which He abundantly poured over us through Jesus Christ our Saviour.
Dear friends, through baptism, we are cleansed from original and personal sins, we become new creations, configured to Christ and incorporated into the Body of Christ, the Church. We are reminded today to recall our own baptism, and like Jesus, we are being sent out on a mission of proclaiming in words and deeds the Good News of God’s love to humanity.
I pray that as we journey in life today, we will be conscious of the relevance and effect of baptism in our lives, the transformation it brings to us. May the words of Gregory of Nazianzus be our guide: “Let us be buried with Christ by Baptism to rise with Him; let us go down with Him to be raised with Him; and let us rise with Him to be glorified with Him”. May our renewal in Christ help us through the power of the Spirit to renew the face of the earth. Have a Happy Sunday and be Renewed!
