HOMILY/SERMON FOR THURSDAY 15TH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “COME TO ME, ALL YOU WHO LABOR AND ARE BURDENED, AND I WILL GIVE YOU REST.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Isa 26:7-9, 12, 16-19; Psalm 101(102):13-21; Matt 11:28-30

In ancient times, when Israel offended God in the desert, God swore that those concerned would never enter into His rest. In the book of Revelation and in the Letter to the Hebrews, God’s rest becomes a synonym for eternal life in heaven.

Today, in the gospel, Jesus invites us, following the drudgery and struggles of this life, to come to him, so that in and through him, we may find rest. Yokes are generally burdensome since they were instruments of heavy-duty work that were strapped on oxen for the tilling of the ground. The yoke became an ancient symbol of the Law and its burden and impracticability. Christ’s yoke places obligations and demands on us, whose burden is accompanied by God’s love and mercy. It is redemptive, and therefore, light instead of being heavy. By our complete submission to Christ’s law of love, we embrace the fullness of who God is and what that means in our relationship with fellow human beings. The more we answer the invitation from Christ, the more profound our commitment and growth in the spirit becomes. Isaiah’s message of hope in today’s first reading enjoins us to remain just and to seek righteousness in life, irrespective of the difficulties that we encounter during life’s journey. In God we find true peace, mercy and joy.

O Lord, you mete out peace to us, for it is you who have accomplished all we have done. Amen.
