HOMILY/SERMON FOR TUESDAY 17TH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: SOWING GOOD SEED
BY: Bishop Gerald M. Musa
Jeremiah 14:17-22, Ps. 79:8-9,11,13, Matthew 13:36-43
A popular proverb says, “Good seed makes a good crop.” In explaining the Parable of the Weeds of the Field to his disciples, Jesus says, “The sower of the good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world, the good seed means the sons of the kingdom; the weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the close of the age, and the reapers are angels” (Matthew 13:37-39).

In a sense, we are all sowers as we constantly strive to plant good seeds for our future, health, children, and welfare. Planting a good seed is like investing in something good and expecting it to yield a good result. Our daily labour is a way of planting seeds, which come out in the form of remuneration, salaries, wages, job fulfilment, harvest, and results that we receive afterwards.
Good seeds are supposed to yield a good harvest. However, in a different parable (Parable of the Sower), Jesus says the seed is not always the problem but the soil on which it is planted (rocky, thorny, path, or good). The parable of weeds tells us to beware of weeds among good seeds. Can we intentionally plan to plant the good seeds of goodness, love, peace, kindness, and joy in a world full of evil and weeds of hatred, conflicts, and wickedness?
