HOMILY/ SOLEMNITY OF MARY MOTHER OF GOD (57TH WORLD DAY OF PEACE) – YEAR B

THEME: Artifical Intelligence and Peace!

BY: Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor

Num.6:22-27; Ps.67; Gal.4:4-7; Luke 2:16-21

The celebration of Mary, Mother of God, in the Catholic Church originated from the recognition of Mary as the mother of Jesus, who is both fully human and fully divine. The title “Mother of God” was affirmed at the Council of Ephesus in 431 AD. The specific celebration on January 1st, known as the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, commemorates this role and coincides with the octave day of Christmas, emphasising the connection between Jesus’ birth and Mary’s motherhood.

As we begin a fresh year, we are reminded of the blessings and hope carried forward through the ages, as seen in Aaron’s blessing of the people of Israel, despite a world often darkened by violence, war, and suffering. In Nigeria, the situation is worsened by the plague of selfish and corrupt leaders, the abject loss of value for human life, and the absence of a national conscience. Yet, our hope is grounded in Jesus Christ, who, despite experiencing life’s hardships, advocated for peace, guiding us towards a path of reconciliation, love, compassion, and understanding.

Friends, the rapid changes in our world today, especially with advancements in technology like Artificial Intelligence (AI), shape our societies in unimaginable ways, bringing both potential benefits and risks. In this context, Pope Francis’s call for responsible and ethical use of AI, and for international cooperation and regulation to address its challenges, becomes particularly significant. As we step into this new year, we are called to ensure that AI is a force for good, driving peace, justice, and human fraternity, and that every human life is valued, respected, and protected. It is our responsibility to strive to be instruments of this peace in our homes, communities, societies, and the world. The peace of Christ, which goes beyond the mere absence of war to the presence of justice, love, and fraternity, should guide us in this new year.

God bless your year ahead. Happy 2024!
