33RD SUNDAY HOMILY,  ORDINARY TIME – YEAR A.

THEME: PRINCIPLE OF STEWARDSHIP

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:
(Mt. 25:14-30)
In the day’s Gospel Jesus tells the parable of the talents. It is a parable on Stewardship. A man left his possessions in the care of his servants. When he came back, he expected that they had done something to make his possessions earn some profits. One servant did not earn any while the others presented some profits. The man found the one who had not earned any profit unworthy and took what was entrusted to him and gave it to the one who earned most. In the same way, God has endowed us with many gifts. What have we done with them? Do we have fruits to present to the Lord?

All of us had been given gifts. Gift of intelligence, talents, strength, riches, personality, body, etc. Everything we have and are came from God’s generosity. Like in the parable, He expects us to bear fruit. Material gifts must increase or shared to others. Talents must be used in accordance with God’s will. Spiritual gifts must inspire others as we, ourselves, advance our relationship with God.

Are our gifts blessings to us? Gifts, to be a blessing, must be used for God’s greater glory. They are not essentially for profit, power, or praise. Not that they are bad. In the course of making them blessings, we may become richer, acquire power, or become famous. But those are not our main goals. Our gifts were entrusted by God for the service of the community. They should lead others and us to know, love, and serve God.

Otherwise, our gifts may turn into a curse. The very things God had given us should not remain stagnant and fruitless. Much more, they ought not to be used against the will of God. Committing sins using those gifts are possible. We have heard of people using their intelligence to dupe others. Bodies are immorally shown to gain money. Moneys are used to corrupt others. It is unfortunate that the very gifts given by God we’re being used sinfully. In the process, the blessings become curses!

God is the owner of everything. He entrusted our whole life and everything in it. Our destiny is to bring ourselves with Him in the Kingdom. We attain that by being responsible stewards. When the Lord comes or face Him for judgment, we will account for everything we have done. Hopefully, we will be found responsible and worthy.
