HOMILY FOR THURSDAY OF THE FIRST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: WHY NOT TRY JESUS?
BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon
In the day’s Gospel Jesus cured a man with leprosy.
Leprosy was a dreaded disease during the time of the Lord. They were thrown outside the city and left for dead. They suffered the stigma of being considered unclean and sinners. Lepers were living dead.
That is why when this leper heard about the power of Jesus to heal, hope sprung in his heart. Why not try Jesus? He had nothing to lose. Yet, what was striking with this leper is that he still submitted to the will of Jesus. No matter how desperate he was, he still respected Jesus’ will. He was one who will never demand something even as dire as leprosy which could bring him slowly to death.
Jesus obliged! Most probably, He saw the faith and the hope of the leper. Jesus knew the heart of the man with leprosy. Jesus also knew that many were watching. It was an opportunity to show His power. yet, after he healing, Jesus commanded the leper not to tell anyone. He was also instructed to go to the priest and make the necessary offering.
Was jesus being humble? Was Jesus afraid of the leaders? Was Jesus avoiding to be bothered by other sick people? None of these. Jesus wanted to be known not only as a healer but the Messiah. There were also healers during His time. He did not want to be identified with any of those healers. His healing was both physical and spiritual. He heals and forgives at the same time. Hopefully, people will come to Him not only to be healed of their physical sickness but to be converted back to God too.
