HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF THE TWENTY-SEVENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A.

HOMILY THEME: THE ONE THING NEEDED

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:
(Lk. 10:38-42)
In the day’s Gospel Jesus visits His friends Mary and Martha, the sisters of Lazarus. This Gospel is known for distinguishing the two kinds of life; active life which is represented by Martha, and contemplative life which represented by Mary. Jesus seems to favor Mary who He praised for having chosen the better part. But it was never to demean and discount what Martha was doing. I think the key word is “better.” Contemplative or prayer life is basic and foundational. In any relationship, communicating is foremost. It is necessary to determine the course of action. It is very much connected to active life in fact, they compliment each other. Active life finds strength and inspiration in prayer. On the other hand, contemplative life finds realization and flesh in active life.

The reminder of Jesus is timely in a world which had become so fast and work/result-oriented. It is a rat race out there. Silence and contemplation are extraordinary and uncomfortable. People just have to always move and talk. Serenity is almost taboo.

There are, however, some remaining good signs. Sanctuaries in the middle of cities still exist and are being patronized. More and more chapels and private nooks are being provided in malls and public gardens. Places of prayer and rest are being provided. People are beginning find tranquility in those places.

Anchor your active life on a good prayer life. Seek first God’s will and use it to propel you to a truly radical and effective active life.
