HOMILY THEME: THE COMING OF THE LORD

(Lk. 22:5-11)
In the day’s Gospel Jesus warned the people about what is to come. The temple was the center of worship for the Jews. They seek God’s presence in the temple. The temple possesses the highest dignity. It was made of costly stones and adorned lavishly. Jesus told the people that even the temple will not be spared when “the day” will come. Jesus gave signs when the parousia will happen.
Jesus was sending a very important message to the Jews and to all of us. While God’s presence is found in the temple, specially in the Holy of Holies, God is everywhere. The Jews gave so much importance to the temple that when it was destroyed, they also felt devastated and thought they had lost God too.
We have a place for worship. Our churches and chapels today provide for that. We try to make them as apt and convenient for worship in order to feel and experience God’s presence. But it should be clear that God can also be found anywhere. When the Second Coming happens, we worry not so much on the calamities which will happen but the judgment He brings.
Advent is again coming. The dominant theme is the parousia. We are told to prepare for the coming of the Lord. Jesus gave signs which paint a very gloomy doom. Many are worried and afraid of these events. They fear the destruction of properties and the loss of lives including their own. That would be missing the message of Jesus. When that time comes, we should be more concerned with our own judgment. How will the Lord judge us? How have we live our lives? These are what should occupy us.
