HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF THE FIRST WEEK OF LENT YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: BASIC PRAYER OF EVERY CHRISTIAN

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Mt. 6:7-15)
Tuesday of the First Week of Lent (Day 7 of Lent)

In the day’s Gospel Jesus teaches His disciples how to pray. This prayer which we aptly call, The Lord’s Prayer, has become the basic prayer of every Christian. It is considered the perfect prayer because it was uttered and taught by the Lord Jesus.

Praying the Lord’s Prayer itself already makes our prayer meaningful and substantial. If we mean every word, it will also be fruitful. It has two main parts: praising God and summoning His providence. The latter part is usually part of everyone’s prayer. Most of the time, we forget or take for granted the former.

Recognizing God by praising Him means a lot in prayer. When we bend our knees and fold our hands to pray, it is best that we adapt the attitude of humility, of a dependent and one who knows who God is and what He can do. Submitting to the will of God is the mark of a true prayer.

In the first place, which will is important? Ours or God’s? Which words should be heard? Ours or God’s? Knowing our position whenever we communicate with God helps determine the quality and continuity of the prayer. As the saying goes: “Pray as if everything depends on God and work as if everything depends on you!”
