HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF SIXTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: UNDERSTANDING THE MESSAGE

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Mk. 8:14-21)
In the day’s Gospel, Jesus warned His disciples on the leaven or the attitude of the Pharisees and their lack of the capacity to understand the events unfolding before them. Even Jesus, Himself, the Word made flesh and the best preacher one could ever have, was having difficulty preaching to His apostles.

This goes to show that understanding the Word of God does not only depend on the preacher. The listener also possess a great responsibility to absorb what was preached.

But Jesus was patient with them in the same way that He is patient with us. He knew how difficult it was in understanding His words given that there are many distractions in life. We are full with our personal concerns foremost of which is how to cope with surviving our daily challenges. Most of the time, our relationship with the Lord takes a backseat or set aside. We sometimes think that life can be lived without God.

Wisdom is a gift of the Holy Spirit. We should humble ourselves and rely on the Spirit to help us understand God’s messages. No matter how intelligent we are, they will not be enough to fathom the fullness of God’s message. We need God to understand. We need God to be humble. We need God to live life to the full.
