HOMILY FOR THE TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A.

HOMILY THEME: THE NEED FOR A CHANGE OF HEART

BY: Fr. Cosmas Ukadike

HOMILY:
Change is one thing that is constant in life, and the fruit of change is progress and betterment. Change can either be positive or negative. The negative aspect of change is going from good to bad or from bad to worse.

However, positive change is what we mean above when we talk of “progress” and “betterment”.

Our reflection centers on positive change. In todays first reading, the call to change is a call to abandon all evil ways and every form of life style that displeases God and man. This form of change delights the Lord because it does not arose his anger, rather , it calls down his blessings on the individual: thus God forgives the sinner who repents and rewards him with life.

The Gospel calls our attention to having a second thought – a rethink, especially when we have taking a wrong decision not to do what is right either out of anger or for other reasons best known to us. For so long as our decision is not aimed at pleasing God or doing his will, we must make a U-turn like the first son did today (Matt 21, 28- 30). Even though the first son initially descide to bluntly say no to his fathers request, but on a second thought , he saw the need to do his fathers will and not his own will. Todays second reading admonishes:
“We must do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others better than ourselves” (Phil 2, 3-4).

Humility is key to helping us make a U-turn from every evil or malicious decisions we have taken. The enermy instils the sturborn spirit of pride in us, making us not to see any sense in what any other person is saying save our on opinion. This makes the saying true, that “pride goes before a fall”.

Learning from Jesus is very important. He was in the form of God, but refused to cling to his equality with God . St Paul says: “this is something to learn”(Phil 2, 6).. Let us therefore sheathe our swords, put down our armes and allow positive change to engulf us.

God needs you more than ever. Let us change our minds and follow the path of God- the path of righteousness.
Have a Blessed week.
