HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY OF THE THIRTY-THIRD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A.

HOMILY THEME: TO EVERY MAN WHO HAS, MORE WILL BE GIVEN TO HIM

BY: Fr Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:
(Lk. 19:11-28)
In the day’s Gospel Jesus tells the parable of a nobleman who left his servants some coins in order for them to engage in trade while he was away. When he came back, some servants netted some gains while others did not.He praised those who gained and took away the coins of those who did not made some profits. The message is that just as those who had been good stewards would have more so will we be. And if we had not gained at all, what we have would be taken from us.

Clearly, as far as God is concerned, we have to be productive. All of us had been given gifts by God. Those gifts were meant to be used and not hidden. Further, they should be used for the service of others. Yes, through them we can have a living and acquire a lot of riches, prestige, power, and fame. But God’s purpose is more than giving us those things which are worldly values. He meant those gifts to be used for the benefit of others. Ultimately, they must be used for the greater glory of God.

We know it is not that easy to see. It is unfortunate if we do not see our gifts as God- given. When we attribute them to ourselves, selfishness and pride comes in. Too much power, fame, and riches gained from them may bring us to the belief that we can live by ourselves and without God. In that case, our gifts had become our curse. That which is suppose to generate us blessings, had brought us curses. Thus, it is very important for us never to lose track of the true origin and source of everything we have.

Stewardship involves recognition of who is the owner. God is the owner of everything. Next, it entails accountability. We need to recognize that we have to answer God for what we have done with our gifts. Responsibility comes immediately. As the one entrusted with talents, we owe them to God and we use them according to His will. Lastly, it involves reward. When we are good stewards, God will entrust us with more talents. Determine your gifts. Use them for the greater glory of God. Make them blessings the way they were meant to be.
