HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY OF THE THIRD WEEK OF LENT YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: NECESSITY OF OBEYING THE LAWS OF GOD

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Mt. 5:17-19)
Wednesday of the Third Week of Lent (Day 22 of Lent)

In the day’s Gospel Jesus stresses the importance and necessity of obeying the laws of God. Laws are meant to guide and lead people to the Kingdom. If they are followed, they will be great in God’s Kingdom. If they were disobeyed, they will be the least in the Kingdom. Jesus also reminds us that God’s laws will be fulfilled in due time. His statement that every letter and every part of the letter will take place means that everything God had promised and commanded will happen, no more, no less.

If there is anyone who knows life perfectly, it is God. The laws He made are meant to lead us through life on our way to our true destiny. God assures us of fulfilment if we trust Him and obey His laws. Indeed, if there is anyone we can entrust our lives fully, it is God. His laws are expressions of His love and guidance. His laws must be followed.

The above should be easy. But sometimes we seem to know more than God. We try to assume God’s position. We let our limited human reasoning prevail. We assess God’s moves with our imperfect minds. It is a case of the less ruling the great, the imperfect dictating the perfect, the limited reigning over the unlimited and the earthly taking over the eternal. If we humble ourselves and allow God’s laws to take over, being great in the Kingdom is attainable.
