MEMORIAL OF THE GUARDIAN ANGELS HOMILY — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “See, I am sending an angel before you, to guard you on the way and bring you to the place I have prepared.”

Nehemiah 8:1-12, Ps. 19:8-11, Matthew 18:1-5,10

Angel, from the Greek Angelos and Latin Angelus, which translate the Hebrew mal’ak, means messenger. Messengers, who in the ancient mindset, possessed the dignity and power of the sender, in their case, God. That is why, in his instruction to Moses, God said: “my authority resides in him.” Angels guide, guard, lead, protect, accompany, fight on people’s behalf, bear good news, heal, and defend as representatives of God, who cares from everyone individually and specially. That is why God appoints Guardian Angels for/over us.

Jesus notes in the gospel that such Guardian Angels are on guard over children to defend them and warns against maltreating children, and thus incurring the wrath of their Guardian Angels. They guided Israel as a nation as long as she submitted herself to such guidance through obedience; and were there for individual children of God, who needed help at different times. They function as lifelong companions so that they could shepherd us into their company in heaven, where we may join them in praising, glorifying serving God eternally. Psalm 91 assures us that even in the dark of night, God’s angels make God’s light visible. Belief in guardian angels is a reaffirmation of the fact that God loves each of us personally, specially and completely. That love is translated into the abiding companionship of our loving and compassionate God through life’s journey. That is the basis for the encouragement given to us by the Lord Jesus in Matt 6:25-34, asking us to worry less and always trust in God’s provision.

Lord, may your angels go before us in our challenges and difficulties. Amen.

Angel of God, my guardian dear,
to whom God’s love commits me here,
ever this day/night be at my side,
to light and guard, to rule and guide.
Amen.
