MONDAY, 32ND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A – HOMILY

THEME: TEMPTATION.

“Temptations to sin are sure to come; but woe to him by whom they come.”

In the Gospel of today (Luke 17:1-6), Jesus starts His exhortations by reminding us all that, “temptations to sin are sure to come.” In our fallen world, we will never be free from temptation. Temptation is a strong urge or desire to do something wrong or unwise, and we all experience these temptations. Even Jesus Christ experienced temptations while on earth.

We tend to think of sin as a “singular” matter, that which a particular person commits, for which he or she is individually responsible. That is true, but it is not the total picture. Every sin begins as a temptation. And we can be a source of temptation to someone leading to sin.

Jesus adds, “…but woe to the one through whom they (temptations)come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones into sin.”

There are two aspects to these verses through which we are called to grow in love. First, we grow together in love by not tempting others to sin, and secondly, we grow in love by forgiving others when they repent of their sin. Both these aspects of love are vital for a healthy growing community of disciples.

Today, Jesus is warning us to be very careful as to how we influence each other. We must not tempt anyone either by word or deed or any action of ours to act in any way that is against the rules of society. We are also called to repentance. If someone hurts us or angers us, we are asked to forgive them, and we are also asked to seek forgiveness if we are in the wrong.

Temptations take on a life of their own; that is why they keep growing. They have a mind that thinks for us, a voice that speaks to us, and a power that keeps conquering us if not checked. GOD IS STILL ON THE THRONE. May God have mercy on us, bless us and protect us all through Christ Our Lord Amen. Good morning.
