MONDAY HOMILY OF 16TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: I SAW HIM

BY: Bishop Gerald M. Musa

John 20:1-2, 11-18

Mary of Magdala (Mary Magdalene) is one of the most misunderstood women in the scriptures. The book The Da Vinci Code is among the many sources spreading inaccurate information and misconceptions about her. She was considered a notorious sinner. Jesus saved her and delivered her from seven demons that tormented her. Like St. Paul, she could have said: “I am the foremost of sinners; but I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life” (1 Timothy 1:15-16).

In gratitude to Jesus, she traveled with him and his disciples and generously supported them in their ministry (Luke 8:1-3). She accompanied him to Calvary, where she stood under his cross with Mary, his mother. After his burial, she courageously went to the tomb in the early hours of the morning. She exemplifies the words of scripture that say: “Perfect love casts out fear” (1 John 4:18). She was the first to see the risen Christ and it was she who announced to his disciples, “I have seen the Lord” (John 20:18). Can we learn to open our hearts to Jesus as Mary Magdalene did? Can we learn to love courageously and proclaim that we too have seen the mercy and goodness of God?
