MONDAY HOMILY OF THE 2ND WEEK IN LENT — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: DEEPER IN OBEDIENCE

BY: Fr. Paul Karabari

‘Put out into the deep.’

1 Peter 4:7b-11; Luke 5:1-11

In the Gospel of today (Luk 5:1-11), we see the disciples who went to fish all night and caugt nothing. Jesus said to them, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets”…And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish’ (Luke 5:4-6). There are four lessons we can learn from this:

1) Working harder isn’t necessarily the answer. The disciples “worked hard all night.” Nobody could have questioned their work ethic. But they needed to go deeper to see any results. When we are trying to work on our relationship with God, sometimes we need to go deeper rather than try harder. When we go deeper in our relationship with God, we receive grace, and grace excuses protocols and suspends both natural and human laws. Without this, we struggle and toil in vain.

2) We need to obey God even when we don’t understand His plan. Peter was an experienced fisherman. When Jesus told him how to catch fish, he had to set aside his pride and say, ‘But because you say so, I will let down the nets’ (v.5). In 2 Kings 5, Naaman had to humble himself and bathe in the Jordan in order to be healed of leprosy. In Gethsemane, Jesus displayed the same attitude when He prayed, ‘Not my will, but yours be done’ (Luke 22:42). God’s ways don’t always make sense to us, but when He tells us to do something, we should obey Him because His plans for us are always better than those we create for ourselves.

3) Going deeper always works. Jesus said two men built houses, but only one house survived the storm because the builder ‘dug…deep and laid the foundation on rock’ (Luke 6:48). When our foundations are deep in God, we are more likely to be able to withstand the storms that we have to face in life. Going deeper with God will always bring us to a new level of relationship with God.

4) We can’t rely solely on our abilities. The experience of these fishermen shows that no matter how skilful, intelligent, professional, and experienced we may be, we can be defeated in our own field if God isn’t involved. Our abilities can fail. And what and how we feel means nothing if God has given a command. GOD IS STILL ON THE THRONE. May God grant us the grace to rely on Him in all we do. May He bless you and your household always through Christ Our Lord Amen. St Patrick …Pray for us. Good morning
