PENTECOST SUNDAY HOMILY — YEAR C

HOMILY THEME: “THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL TEACH YOU EVERYTHING”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Acts. 2: 1-11, Ps. 104, 1 Cor. 12: 3-7, 12, John 14: 15-15

The sufficiency of the special gift of the Holy Spirit from the Father and the Son to disciples, that is, us, is in focus today. The Spirit was all the Early Church needed to head out into the world, no matter how the journey unfolded. The Spirit is all we need on our witness and journey through life. Absence of the Spirit in the Church and in our lives makes us orphans; exactly what Jesus never wished for us when he noted: “I will not leave you orphans.”

The Spirit is the other Advocate, sent at the behest of the first Advocate, Jesus himself. Just as having Jesus is everything, so also the Holy Spirit is everything to us, the principal animator of the Church and of individual disciples. It is only through the Holy Spirit that we truly experience and appropriate the divine indwelling promised by Christ, in today’s gospel. St. Paul advices us to cultivate a functioning relationship with the Holy Spirit, because without the Spirit, a relationship with Christ is impossible. Through the Spirit, we become God’s children and co-heirs with Christ, sharing in his sufferings so as to share in his glory. The first reading refreshes our minds on the events of the first Pentecost, even as we are reassured that every Pentecost makes available a renewed outpouring of the Holy Spirit, who continues to be available to the Church and to us through sacramental life, every sacramental encounter. That gifting of the Holy Spirit was an exceptional act of God, a mystery of faith, which marked the birth of a new creation (the Church) that is united in the language of faith and God’s love. Even though the event has never been repeated in exactly the same way, the gift persists and accompanies us daily. Let us cherish God’s love for us in the gift of His Spirit, drink up the special gifts that accompany that gift (wisdom, knowledge, counsel, piety, understanding, fortitude and the fear of God) and let the Spirit’s fruits be the content of our Christian witness (love, joy, peace, patience, benignity, goodness, longanimity, mildness, faith, modesty, continency, and chastity), with which the virtues of gentleness, generosity, and kindness are associated.

Holy Spirit, our Advocate, Guardian and Teacher; fill us with your love, life and strength. Amen.

Have a Spirit-filled Pentecost Sunday!
