REFLECTION FOR WEDNESDAY OF THE 2ND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR I.

THEME: SHARE IN CHRIST’S PRIESTHOOD.

BY: Fr Francis Onwunali.

The readings of today’s liturgy continue to highlight the theme of yesterday on the approach towards the Sabbath law. Taking “our sabbath rest” is a way of expressing honor to God for all that he has done for us in and through Jesus Christ our Lord and Redeemer. Such “rest” however does not exempt us from our love for our neighbor. If we truly love the Lord above all else, then the love of God will overflow to love of neighbor as well.

In the first ready (Heb 7: 1-3, 15-17), the author compares the priesthood of Christ and that of Melchizedek of old (Gen. 14: 17-20). Christ’s priesthood is the fulfilment of the prophecy of old, “who is a priest not by virtue of a law about physical descent, but by the power of an indestructible life”.

RELATED: HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY OF THE 2ND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR I

In the gospel (Mark 3: 1-6), Jesus once again asserts His authority over the laws of the Sabbath and brings salvation to someone who needs healing and wholeness. As a servant-king, He was ready to suffer persecution for the good of those who come to Him.

Dear friends, through our Baptism, each of us have been called to share in Christ’s role as priest, prophet and king. We are priestly when we help sanctify others, bringing them into deeper relationship with God; we are prophetic when we speak the Lord Jesus’ healing and comforting words to those in need and kingly when we lead others to doing what God wants.

I pray as we journey in life today, we will have the grace and courage to take up our priestly, prophetic and kingly role as people who are already configured to Christ the High Priest of our faith, in bringing peace and righteousness to those we encounter. May we sit on His right hand, as He puts our foes (challenges) beneath our feet. Have an Anointing-full day!
