REFLECTION/HOMILY FOR 12TH TUESDAY OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: PUT YOUR TRUST IN GOD!

Fr Oselumhense Anetor

2 Kings 19:9-11, 14-21, 31-36; Psalm 47(48):2-4, 10-11; Matthew 7:6, 12-14

In today’s first reading, the King of Assyria was advancing steadily, gobbling up the little states on the east coast of the Mediterranean, and eventually devouring Samaria in 721BC. His game was such that all those conquered were deported to different territories, thus separating them from their national cultures, so that their only loyalty was to the Empire. This was to be the fate of Hezekiah if he hadn’t cried out to God.

Friends, when Sennacherib sends the letter to King Hezekiah, spiting God, Hezekiah properly took it to God, and the rest is history. The Lord responds through the prophet Isaiah and “that same night the angel of the Lord went out and struck down a hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp”. Sennacherib took what was left of his soldiers, struck camp and left; he returned home and stayed in Nineveh. Friends, King Hezekiah had instituted a significant religious reform, abolishing many of the non-Yahwistic shrines, and ensuring that the people trusted in God. His faith was rewarded because God establishes his city for ever. We too are called to put our trust entirely on Him.

Good morning dear, God bless your day ahead.
