REFLECTION/HOMILY FOR 25TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: GOD’S MERCY AND HIS KINGDOM ARE FOR EVERYONE.

HOMILY: In the reading from the prophet Isaiah, Gods word encourages everyone to turn to the Lord in prayer; it doesn’t matter the time you are hearing this word whether as an old man or a young lady, or whatever you are, a Jew or Gentile; for he never ignores the prayers of those who come to him in humility (55, 6).
This call is an open invitation to seek the Lord and to be part of his kingdom. Jesus in the day’s Gospel emphasizes the need for everyone to come to the Lord for he is generous and merciful to all.
In a lengthy parable which seem to have its direct object as showing that though the Jews were first called into the vineyard of the Lord, however, the gospel should be preached to the Gentiles (unbelievers- everyone as well), and they should be admitted to equal privileges and advantages with the Jews (Matt 20, 1-16). The parable could also be applied more generally, and shows;

1. That God is debtor to no man/woman.
2. That many who begin last, and as though had no bearing, sometimes, by the blessing of God, arrive at a great deal of knowledge, grace and usefulness.
3. That all recompense of reward will be given to those who have strived for it, but not according to the time of their conversion. Till we are hired into the service of God, we are standing all the day idle: a sinful state; though a state of drudgery to Satan may be called a state of idleness.
The market place is the world, and from there we are called by the gospel (Matt 20, 2-3). Jesus is calling you today from that market place to work for him, do not hesitate, whatever your reasons maybe, just trust that you will be handsomely rewarded. This does not mean that we need work for mere reward but there’s true joy in serving the Lord. It is more pleasant to say after we must have done all our duties that we are unprofitable servants; but it signifies that there is a reward set before us.
There is great proneness in us to think that we have too little, and others too much of the tokens of Gods favour; and that we do too much, and others do too little in the work of God. But if God gives grace to others, it is kindness to them, and no injustice to us. Therefore he does no wrong to anyone, by showing extraordinary grace to some people.
Let us forgo every proud claim, and seek for salvation as a free gift (unmerited grace). Let us never envy or grudge, but rejoice and praise God for his mercy to others as well as to ourselves. Come to him today and your heart will rejoice! Have a blessed week.
