HOMILY THEME: “THEREFORE, WHAT GOD HAS JOINED TOGETHER, NO HUMAN BEING MUST SEPARATE.”

My Morning Minute With Jesus

Marriage is the focus of today’s gospel. St. James’ message today adds very pertinent values for married and family life. He encourages us to shelve judgmental attitudes and, instead, cultivate perseverance, compassion and mercy, in imitation of our heavenly Father. He ends by urging sincerity and integrity in both word and action. When one’s words and actions are unpredictable and untrustworthy or undependable in family or marriage, it complicates people’s life and destroys love and unity, two essential elements of enduring family/marriage life. Consequently, the belief in true love as the source of married life and the lubricant of family has eroded in our society and given way to mutual suspicion, lack of trust, and selfish interests, resulting in marriage leases instead of covenants.

People now go into marriages with hypothetical perceptions. Instead of the determination to invest everything in and make it work, they begin with the readiness to stay if certain conditions are fulfilled or quit if those conditions are absent. Such conditions are often inconsequential in terms of the real needs of marriage and family life. The absence of God in marriages is increasingly becoming common, because couples hate those divine factors that endear them to forgiveness, endurance, sacrifice, mutual respect and love, and holiness of life. Couples and families must look up to God again; and anchor their lives on the true source of all that is good. Marriage and family are God’s creation, irrespective of human distortions and contortions. With Christ actively in your boat, true unity and love will shore you up in times of difficulty and crises; yours will endure.

Lord, bless all marriages and our families; heal struggling couples and families; mend broken relationships; strengthen us with the same love and unity that binds the Blessed Trinity. Amen.
