SATURDAY HOMILY OF THE 10TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: WHY SWEAR AT ALL?
BY: Fr. Oselumhense Anetor
1 Kings 19:19-21; Psalm 15(16):1-2, 5, 7-10; Matt 5:33-37
I remember when we were younger, we would insist on swearing even when we weren’t telling the truth. Why? We felt we would be better believed if we put our finger in our mouths and raised it to the sky, saying “truth to God!” To be more emphatic, we even added, “if I lie, make I die” sometimes. Can you imagine? Jesus tells us today that all manner of swearing comes from the evil one. It suffices to say ‘Yes’ if you mean yes and ‘No’ if you mean no.

Friends, Look around you. Those who take all manner of oaths are mostly cultists, members of terrible and violent gangs, and also ignorant youngsters in search of love, power, or wealth; without prejudice to solemn vows. While a vow is firstly an earnest pledge that obligates one to perform a specified act or behave in a certain manner, especially a solemn promise to live and act in accordance with the prescriptions of a religious body, an oath involves a conditional self-cursing. Our yes to God should therefore not be an attempt to prove to anyone how perfect we are, but a genuine striving daily to be better aligned to God’s will in the manner of our words and actions. May we by God’s grace become less attuned to a double-standard way of life, Amen.
Good morning dear. God bless your weekend.
