SATURDAY HOMILY OF THE 29TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – CYCLE I

Not everyone who says to me, `Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven

YEAR B: HOMILY FOR SATURDAY OF THE 29TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

HOMILY THEME: REALITY OF INCARNATION

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Eph. 4:7-16) Saturday of the Twenty Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

In today’s first reading Paul preached on the reality of the Incarnation. Jesus, who became one like us, died, descended, and ascended into heaven. It paved the way for the Spirit to come and shower the Church with gifts. Not one member possessed all the gifts. It was given to the Church in order to be the instrument of salvation of God.

We had been saved by Christ. But that salvation must be lived and proclaimed to others in the family, parish, and every community we encounter. Our baptism graced us with all the gifts we need to perform prophetic, priestly, and pastoral functions. At the same time that we are striving to attain our salvation, we minister to others for their salvation. It is our goal to be united in faith and reach our destiny.

Paul mentioned the cunning presence of evil which will prowl on earth in the most subtle and scheming way. The threat is still present now. It dons different looks. It can be through immoral laws like same sex marriage, death penalty, and abortion. It can be through tragedies like hunger, war, or epidemic. Ideologies like communism, consumerism, fascism, etc. And how about greed, envy, dishonesty, gluttony, etc.? Our answer? According to Paul, we must live truth in love. It means hanging on to our faith in the Lord amidst all of these evils. Jesus is the Truth. His words are life. Evil pleaded before Him when He was here on earth. Evil is no match to Jesus. We only need to live our lives in Jesus and evil will be defeated!

Let us pray for Jesus to be recognized by people, institutions, and sectors. We need the media to be Christified too. God is not anymore watching from a distance. He had become like us in every way but sin. He knew evil and put it under His spell. Let us support each other, our families, and our Church with the faith which Jesus founded.
