SERMON/HOMILY FOR TUESDAY 18TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: THE PUREST GARMENT

BY: Fr. Onuoja Bright Day

Daniel 7:9-10,13-14, Ps. 97:1-2,5-6,9, Mark 9:2-10

As we celebrate the transfiguration of our Lord Jesus Christ, the gospel reading of today presents to us the account of the event of the transfiguration. A moment when the Lord Jesus Christ became fully transformed into a dazzling White in the presence of his closest apostles.

The feast of the transfiguration is a foretaste of the heavenly kingdom to the people of earth. It is also, a confirmation and the authentication of the person of Jesus Christ to the people of the world. In that, Christ is not a ghost who has come to deceive the world but, he is the true Son of God and the One from whom the world would be saved.

It is the foretaste of heaven because, the atmosphere and likelihood of heaven is shown to men in a swift of time. More so, the voice of God spoke to them to confirm the message of God through Jesus. The two great prophets of God Moses and Elijah appeared to bow to the superiority of Christ and to confirm him as the true Messiah. If there is doubt about whose voice spoke, there cannot be a doubt about the person of Elijah and Moses the prophets. So, God at this feast confirms to us his true Son. His white garment is what we shall become if we follow him, and come closer to him daily. The more we go closer to Jesus, the brighter, holier and purer we shall become. The purer we become, the lesser the grip of evil, demonic oppression and manipulations of the devil. “The nearer you go to God, the nearer God will come to you.” (James 4:8)

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, draw us closer to you to be as pure as you are. We pray for the sick the lonely and the unloved, Lord, shower your light upon them and all of us, that we may become who you are in Jesus name. AMEN
