SERMON/HOMILY OF 11TH WEEK SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: “IT IS LIKE A MUSTARD SEED…”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Ezekiel 17:22-24; 2 Corinthians 5:6-10; Mark 4:26-34
Mark’s Parables of the Kingdom remind us of the role that that God plays in our lives. We go to sleep and we rise and things are different; not just with plants but also with us and everything around us. Boys and girls become men and women, and much more. Mark reminds us that it is God’s work. We do not need proofs. We may only contest it if we are convinced that we are solely responsible for the growth and development that take place in our lives and around us.

In the Mustard Seed parable, we see how the small and lowly community that Jesus planted has become a worldwide phenomenon, present everywhere, grown from seed to a big plant. She, that is, the Church, and we, after we have been blessed with growth, must be responsible for the birds of the sky that seek shade for respite; namely, the needy, poor, underprivileged, orphans, homeless, rejected, weird, physically and mentally challenged, and even sinners. Do we have room for them in the Church? In our hearts? Please examine that purpose clause closely: the reason for the growth and expansion is so that “the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade.” That is part of what we shall be accountable for before the judgment seat of Christ on judgment day. Often, we also forget that we are called to be part of the growth. Every disciple must be involved in evangelization and outreach in order to expand the horizons of the gospel and make Christ present wherever we are; the reason we are identified as missionary disciples. It is in Christ and through us that God’s Kingdom continues to spread. Even the good that we do in favor of the poor and underprivileged takes on the character of evangelization; that is, faith in action.
We thank you God for growth; please empower us to provide for those who need shade under us. Amen.
