SHORT HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY OF THE 4TH WEEK OF LENT

THEME: Put out into the deep!

BY: Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor (Uromi Diocese)

HOMILY: (Feast of St Patrick, Bishop: Secondary Patron Feast of Nigeria).

I Peter 4:7-11; Ps.96:1-10; Luke 5: 1-11

Today, Jesus instructs Simon Peter to put out into deep water and pay out his nets for a catch. Remember St Patrick? He wasn’t afraid to put out into the deep. Apart from the fact that he endured many hardships and faced opposition from friends and fellow Christians, he worked hard to preach the gospel in Ireland; patiently educating chieftains and their families. Don’t forget that most of the early missionaries who brought the faith to Nigeria were Irish.

Friends, we can sit in our comfort zones and refuse to pay out our nets. But if Peter and his friends had refused to become fishers of men and women, who would remember their names in Christian history today? If St Patrick had refused to take the good news to Ireland, who would be celebrating the results of his ‘fishing’ today? In our own Christian journey therefore, we must use the special talents we’ve been given to turn others’ hearts to God. So keep a calm and sober mind; think about that gift you have and begin to use it to pull others into God’s fold. The right time is NOW.

Good morning dear. God bless your weekend ahead. St Patrick, pray for us. Happy Patron’s Feast Day Nigeria!
