SIXTH SUNDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR C
HOMILY THEME: THE BEATITUDE
BY: Fr. Justus Oruh
Genesis 3:1-8; Psalm 32:1-2, 5, 6, 7; Mark 7:31-37
(a) The word “Beatitude” come from the Latin “beatus” which simply means “blessed” or “happy”. In Jeremiah we read that those who put their Faith and trust in God are “blessed”. The word beatitude is common with the popular sermon on the mount by Christ where He proclaims people blessed. St Paul speaks too of how this Faith and trust give value and meaning to our life. The power and confidence of this trust and Faith is that God does not change and does not disappoint. ”

(b) “Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord”! This excerpt however does not promise that the “blessed” would be removed from all challenges and difficulties of life but that through the trust and Faith in God, they could perdure and overcome the challenges. This is clear in Jeremiah 17: – “when heat comes (that is the challenge) they remain ever green; in drought (the challenge), the STILL bear fruits. Christ also mentions in the sermon on the mount, people who are poor, hungry, persecuted, hated, sick but are STILL happy and are blessed.
(c) The opposite of blessing is curse. Jeremiah 17 says, “cursed is the one who trusts in human beings” and upon flesh. Woe to people who puff up and despise God because of their connections and riches, woe to those abandon their Faith because of their wealth. This is exactly what Christ means where he says, Woe to you rich. They will be disappointed because all material things, including humans pass away. The more the number of the people who give up their Faith and trust in God increases, the more the number of people who lead unhappy and cursed life increases.
But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord”!
