SUNDAY HOMILY, 33RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR A

THEME: TO EVERYONE WHO HAS WILL BE GIVEN MORE

By: Fr. Cajetan Anyanwu

This is the 33rd Sunday in ordinary time. We are here in this world to make good use of the gifts and talents God has given us. After, we are expected to give an account of our lives to God. The day of this accountability is not known . It will be sudden and unexpected. This is why Paul says: “You will not be expecting us to write to you, brothers, about ‘times and seasons’, since you know very well that the Day of the Lord is going to come like a thief in the night” (1Thes. 5:1-6). When the Lord comes those who are ready will be considered worthy.

The book of Proverbs presents us with the difficulty of finding a perfect wife. It shows how faithful a good wife is to her husband. “A perfect wife – who can find her? She is far beyond the price of pearls. Her husband’s heart has confidence in her” (Prov. 31:10-13ff). As the children of God we are loved by God as a husband loves his wife. We are expected to do what pleases God at all times.

The saying: “To everyone who has will be given more, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away” (Mtt. 25:14-30), means that, those who make good use of the gifts or talents they received from God, and are thankful for them, shall be blessed more. But those who waste their time and misuse their talents are ungrateful to God, and shall not make progress. We show gratitude to God when we make good use of our gifts. God loves those who do not hide their talents. Laziness is sinful in God’s sight because, ‘an idle mind is the devil’s workshop.’ It is said that, “heaven helps those who help themselves.” Stop hiding, rise up and shine! Happy Sunday!
