HOMILY: The following readings; Acts 2:14,22-28; lPt 1:17-21; Luke 24:13-35, are necessary to read in other to feel the impart of today’s resurrection of the Lord. Every Sunday is a Lord’s day and every Lord’s day should be kept as resurrection day. Therefore, if you see any person around in maintaining the social distance say like the Eastern Church in those days: the Lord is risen and the let other respond, He is risen indeed. Perusing or glancing with spiritual eyes at Gospel narrative, I would like to call our minds to the encyclical of Pope John de ll in 2004 in preparatio to Eucharistic Year and he named: Mane Nobiscum Domine – Stay with us Lord.
Stay with us for it is evening was an appeal made by Cleopas and the other disciple to a sojourner who joined them on the road from Jerusalem to Emmaus. This insistent invitation is a clarion mandate for all Christians to each other in the seeming scenario of today’s Gospel (Corona virus vs hunger virus). The sojourner or visitor or stranger at face level asked strange question. Really, his question sounded strange to the two disciples; what are these things that you are discussing? After 7-8days celebration of Passover. One of the most widely celebrated Jewish holidays. Jesus Christ of Nazareth, the mighty one was condemned to death and immolated at the kpim of the passover. That was the discussion at their table. Unknowingly, the stranger was the Lord of the Passover, who has passed from death to life, who was a teacher, who is a teacher and will always be teacher. Jesus chose a method of being a stranger with strange question in other to teach them the scriptures and bring their mind to the fulfilment of God’s promise.

Having break the bread for the disciples, something still remained. In the Eucharistic celebration, after the breaking of the word comes the breaking of the bread. The word gave meaning to the Eucharist.
Hospitality should be one of the attitudes practiced by every Christian. Abraham our father in faith was known for his hospitality in Gen. 18. Hospitality reveals a lot of God’s glory and promise to us. It opens our eyes to see God in the other person, to reach God in the other person.
The two disciples, Cleopas and his colleague were hospitable enough to give shelter to the strange later known to be Christ. Their hospitality opened their eyes to recognized Jesus when the bread was broken at the table.
Today, let us learn not allow the strangers, hungry men and women, jobless youths, little children in need to pass by our houses, offices, kitchen, finance etc without making a haste to offer something. May the grace of God through our free will move us to recognise the plight of others in this pandemic corona virus atmosphere. As we welcome the needy, may the Lord stay with us and in our families.
