SUNDAY HOMILY FOR SOLEMNITY OF CHRIST THE KING — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “SO, YOU ARE A KING THEN?”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Daniel 7:13-14; Revelation 1:5-8; John 18:33-37

Today, we celebrate the fulfillment of Daniel’s vision (first reading) about the conferral of sovereignty, dominion, and glory on the coming Son of Man, in Christ the King, who has supreme and eternal sovereignty over all. His kingship is the fruit of his faithful witness and obedience upon the cross to the Father, who raised him from the dead and gave him the name above every other name (Phil 2). He is King of kings, a generous king, who shares his reign with his faithful disciples, not to lord it over them like earthly kings but to redeem them and lift them up as kings and priests in the service of God most high.

The world, represented by Pilate in the gospel, neither knows nor recognizes the mystery of Christ’s kingship and kingdom. His disciples receive that knowledge through faith in him. Once known, we must allow his kingship and authority over us to dictate and order every aspect of our lives. We must shun and resist the claims of all authority that is not of God or Christ on us. Understanding the kind of king that Christ helps us to be better subjects of his kingdom. He is a king whose life on earth was characterized by humility, selfless service, a spirit of complete detachment from material allurements, courage, truth, virtue, compassion, empathy, obedience, kindness and enduring generosity in seeing to the physical and spiritual wellbeing of others. He endured rejection, ridicule, suffering and death in order to accomplish his mission as king. Unlike many earthly kings who are removed from their subjects and lord it over them, he enters into communion with his subjects so that they will become more like him; giving them a share in his royal sonship. To be under his reign is to imbibe all of the virtues of the king and to strive daily to be more like him and with him. To be under his rule is to live in such a way as to allow him to continue to live in and through us in our time; so that others may encounter him in us. To be under his rule to live with the constant awareness that our destiny is inseparably tied to his.

Jesus, my Lord and King, I love you. Never let me be separated from you. Amen
