SUNDAY HOMILY OF EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS: YEAR C
HOMILY THEME: THE EXULTATION OF THE CROSS

Num 21 : 4-9, Phil 2:6-11, Jn 3:13-17
“Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.”
Today, in the feast of the Exultation of the Cross, we celebrate God’s profound love for us; love so strong that He let go of His only Son for our sake, so that in his death, we may have life. Jesus was lifted up on the wood of the Cross in a shameful and dehumanizing fashion by those who wanted to extinguish the light of God’s grace.

Yet, in that same shameful act, God’s plan unfolded, exalting Him as he accomplished the salvation, not only of a few, as in the first reading, but rather, of God’s children of every age, time and place. In this divine exultation, he takes his place as the Son of Man, coming in his glory to reign over all those who submit to his rule. His has become the name by which we have access to the Father, by which we are healed and saved, and by which we give glory to God, our Father. As we lift our eyes up to him upon the Cross in our prayers, he also lifts our prayers and supplications to the Father in heaven, so that on the Day of the Lord, we too will be lifted up with him. As we await the Day of the Lord, the Day of our eternal redemption, Christ himself, to whom we look for our salvation, also lifts us up constantly, at different times, places and circumstances, to become sources of strength, relief, solace and hope to others. As often as we humbly recognize this mission in our lives and serve Christ’s purposes faithfully and humbly, his light shines through us to others, dissipating the power and reign of darkness. To refuse to put such upliftment to proper use or to misuse and abuse such upliftment is to have dug our talent in the ground and God will surely hold us accountable.
Lord, we raise our eyes up to you; heal our brokenness and restore us physically and spiritually; that we may become sources of your grace to others. Amen.
