THURSDAY HOMILY OF 16TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: WHO IS A SERVANT-LEADER?

BY: Bishop Gerald M. Musa

2 Cor 4:7-15; Psalm 125(126):1-6; Matt 20:20-28

Wise people say, “A mother’s wish is to see her children embrace opportunities and reach heights she once dreamed of.” We celebrate James the Apostle, the brother of John the Apostle, whose mother approached Jesus to grant her children the privilege of sitting on his right and left in his kingdom. Jesus said such privileges are granted only to those for whom God has prepared. The other ten disciples became angry and wondered why James and John should be given preferential treatment.

Jesus taught them that privileges and greatness have corresponding responsibilities. He said to them, “…Whoever would be great among you must be your servant” (Matthew 20:26). As we celebrate St. James, let us reflect on the concept of servant leadership that Jesus taught his disciples, which has been revisited by many modern authors.

Larry Spears summarizes the characteristics of servant leadership, drawing inspiration from the works of Sir Robert Greenleaf. He lists ten characteristics of servant leadership as follows: Listening; Empathy; Healing (holistic healing of self and relationships); Self-awareness; Persuasion (the ability to speak to others using the language of persuasion, rather than that of force); Conceptualization (having a vision); Foresight (making good decisions that will shape the future); Stewardship (serving the needs of other people); Commitment to the Growth of People; Taking a personal interest in the holistic growth of others; and Building Community (cultivating love, trust, and care). Do these qualities of a servant-leader manifest in our leadership style?
