She Took the Abortion Pill But Her Baby Miraculously Survived: “God Had Other Plans”

Edna Were Mon got a rare second chance.

In her third year of college, the Kenyan woman found out she was pregnant and decided to have an abortion. Were Mon wrote a column for Standard Media recently explaining how the abortion drugs did not work and she found out a few weeks later that she still was pregnant.

Rather than schedule another abortion, she said she realized that God saved her unborn son’s life and gave her a second chance at being a good mother.

Were Mon said she was a 20-year-old college student when she discovered she was pregnant with her son. The news came at an extremely inopportune time. She said she had just found out that she was accepted for a competitive internship, and she knew her parents would be very upset if they found out she was pregnant.

“I didn’t mind being pregnant, but I did mind embarrassing my mother,” Were Mon wrote. “She had previously told me that in case I fell pregnant that would be the cause of her death.”

Were Mon decided that she had to “get rid of it.” Her boyfriend, who worked as a medic, managed to get her abortion drugs to end their unborn baby’s life. After taking the drugs, she said she bled for two weeks and experienced heavy cramping.

A few weeks later, though, she suspected that she still might be pregnant. An ultrasound revealed that her baby boy still was alive inside her womb.

“My son was 8 weeks old, and I had never aborted him after all,” she wrote.

Were Mon said she knew at that moment that “God had other plans” for her and her son. She did not consider trying to abort him again. Instead, she said she canceled her internship and went home to her parents. Though her family shamed her for her pregnancy, Were Mon refused to give up her miracle baby.

She gave birth to her son, Reign, on Jan. 17, 2015 after eight hours of labor.

“My little gift from God,” she wrote. “He still doesn’t know his story, but someday I’ll get the courage to let him know when he becomes a man. I’ll teach him to never let someone’s daughter go through the ordeal I went through. Children are God’s blessing, no matter how wrong the timing is.”

Abortions do not always work, and other unborn babies also have survived abortions.

With abortion drugs in particular, more unborn babies’ lives are being saved thanks to a pioneer procedure that can reverse the effects of the deadly abortion drug RU-486, or mifepristone.

Mifepristone is the first of two abortion drugs typically given to women to induce a first-trimester abortion. It works by blocking the hormone progesterone. The new reversal treatment counteracts the deadly drug by giving the mother injections of progesterone, potentially saving the unborn baby’s life.

At least 300 women have changed their minds after taking the abortion drug and undergone the procedure, according to Drs. George Delgado and Matthew Harrison who developed the procedure. They set up a website,www.abortionpillreversal.com, a 24-hour hotline and a network of more than 300 doctors to help women who want to reverse their abortions and save their babies’ lives.
