TUESDAY HOMILY AFTER PENTECOST — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: LIGHT AND SALT

BY: Bishop Gerald M. Musa

2 Cor 1:18-22; Psalm 119:119-135; Matt 5:13-16

A woman made a big pot of soup but forgot to add salt. Everyone took a spoonful, smiled politely, and quietly went home hungry—just like a Christian who never lives their faith out loud. This means that Christians who hide their faith may appear kind or present, but they fail to truly nourish or impact others, just like unsalted soup that looks good but leaves everyone unsatisfied.

Similarly, Christians are called to make an impact on the world by being the light. Let our goodness glow without fear. The famous writer Edmund Burke rightly says, “Example is the school of mankind, and they will learn at no other.” Jesus teaches us the power of a good example when he says: “You are the salt of the earth; You are the light of the world.” Salt and light are essential elements that people of every tribe and culture can identify with. No wonder the Romans say, “There is nothing more useful than the sun (light) and salt” (nil sole et sale utilius).

Salt is very useful in our diet. We may moderate our intake of salt, but we can hardly live entirely without it. Jesus desires that everyone become a model for a good life, charity, and justice—a model of good manners, a model worthy of emulation. How committed are we to showing a good example?
