TUESDAY HOMILY OF 15TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: THE POWER OF YES IN DISCIPLESHIP

BY: Fr. Obinna Ezeaputa

In today’s gospel reading (Matthew 11:20–24), Jesus rebukes the cities of Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum because they saw him do some amazing things, but they didn’t have faith in him or turn to God. Their faith is like when you plant a seed in rocky soil—it might sprout quickly, but it will wither away just as fast.

But in the midst of this rebuke, Jesus says something remarkable: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). This invitation is at the heart of what Our Lady of Mount Carmel is all about, and we’re celebrating her feast day today. It’s a powerful message of hope and comfort.

The Carmelites respond to this invitation from the Lord by dedicating themselves to contemplation, prayer, and service, and their devotion to Mary is a key part of their charism. For the Carmelites, Mary is the perfect model of discipleship—the one who said “yes” to God’s plan and bore the weight of that “yes” with courage and faith.

Mary’s “yes” to being the mother of a God-made man (Luke 1:38) was not just a one-time decision. It was a lifelong commitment to follow God’s plan, no matter what challenges came her way. She stayed true to her commitment through all the tough times—the flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13–15), the loss of her son in the temple (Luke 2:41–50), and watching him die on the cross (John 19:25–27). But through it all, she never lost her faith or trust in God’s plan.

Michaela, a young mom, felt a strong urge to adopt a child from a country torn apart by war. Although she was scared and unsure, she decided to take the leap and provide a loving home to a child who desperately needed one. Although she faced many challenges along the way, she stayed committed to her decision.

Michaela continued to say “yes” to God’s call, trusting in His plan and provision. She prayed for strength and guidance throughout the process, sought support from her community and adoption agency, and prepared her heart and home to welcome a child with special needs.

After all the waiting and hard work, Michaela finally got to welcome a sweet girl named Grace into her family. With love, care, and patience, Michaela helped Grace feel safe and loved and heal from her past struggles. As time went on, their love and connection grew stronger and stronger, and they became an inseparable family.

Michaela’s story shows us how to imitate Mary’s “yes” by trusting God’s plan despite uncertainty. She followed His will despite obstacles, seeking support and guidance, prioritizing faith and trust in His provision, bearing fruit for His glory through obedience, and making a lasting impact on others, just like Michaela did in Grace’s life, by saying “yes” to God’s plan and trusting in His love and care.

As we reflect on today’s gospel passage (Matthew 11:20–24) and the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, let us ask ourselves: Are we like the cities of Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum, hardened in our hearts and unwilling to listen to God’s voice? Or are we like Mary and Michaela, open to God’s plan and willing to bear the weight of discipleship? Do we say “yes” to God’s will, even when it is difficult or uncertain?

May we, like Mary and Michaela, have the faith to say “yes” to God’s will, even in the face of uncertainty and adversity. May we find rest in Jesus’ invitation, and comfort in His promise to give us strength and guidance. And may our “yes” to God’s plan bear fruit for His glory and make a lasting impact on those around us. Amen.
