TUESDAY HOMILY OF 17TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “LEAVING THE CROWDS, JESUS WENT TO THE HOUSE; AND HIS DISCIPLES CAME TO HIM…”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Jeremiah 14:17-22, Ps. 79:8-9,11,13, Matthew 13:36-43

Being (aloneness) with Jesus is an important component of Christian discipleship. There, discipleship formation and revelation unfold in an atmosphere of faith and trust, as disciples attentively absorb Jesus’ instructions, just as in today’s gospel. There, Jesus explained the parable of the Weeds amidst Wheat to the disciples and told four other parables, noting that: darkness cannot overpower light and evil cannot trounce good. So, disciples must endure in virtue because life’s choices have eternal consequences. We must continue to crave that company daily through the study of God’s word and constant Eucharistic encounters, either at mass or before the Blessed Sacrament.

Sometimes, we are overwhelmed by the menace of evil, as in today’s the first reading, and often wonder if God has abandoned us. That text graphically reflects the present situation in our world. Both Jeremiah and Jesus encourage us to cry out to God unceasingly, knowing that divine intervention terminates the assault of evil. A friend gave me a beautiful T-shirt this summer with the inscription: “I’ve read the final chapter; GOD WINS.” Who do you want to hang out with? The winner or the loser? Jesus invites us to hang out and to hang in there with him. Being with him makes us beneficiaries of the mysteries of the Kingdom. We ask God to have mercy on our world; to overlook human foolishness and pride; and save us from calamity out of his loving kindness.

Rescue us, O Lord, for the glory of your name. Amen.
