TUESDAY HOMILY OF 2ND WEEK IN LENT — YEAR A

TUESDAY HOMILY OF 2ND WEEK IN LENT — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “Anyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and anyone who humbles himself will be exalted.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Isaiah 1:10,16-20, Ps. 50:8-9,16-17,21,23, Matthew 23:1-12
Lent is an opportune time to fix our relationship with God, but our relationship with God cannot be fixed to the exclusion of our relationship with fellow human beings, especially the less privileged. Even as God invites us to himself, in the first reading, his focus is on our attitude toward the oppressed, orphans, and widows. We have to ensure justice for all, especially those at the bottom and those on the margins. To refuse to renounce our sins and unjust acts by wholeheartedly committing to such justice is self-destructive rebellion against God.

Today’s gospel urges all, especially, leaders, to lead by example. Their words and teachings must conform to their actions, driven by an interior commitment to God’s ways. Such a life sees the call to leadership and the privilege of office as opportunities for humble service, under God, our Father, and Jesus Christ, the one Teacher and Master, for we are all brothers and sisters. Indeed, there are fathers, mothers, teachers, leaders, etc., but all of these positions have their true validity only in so far as they truly represent the providential and loving care of God, or Christ. That keeps us humble before God and humans, and will exalt us to communion with the Godhead in heaven.
Lord, keep us true to our calling. Amen
