Vatican Declares “Co-Redemptrix” and “Mediatrix” Inapt as Marian Titles
Vatican City, Nov 4, 2025 — In a decisive move, the Vatican’s doctrinal arm has ruled that the Marian titles “Co-Redemptrix” and “Mediatrix (of All Graces)” are no longer appropriate for describing Mary’s role in salvation. In a newly released doctrinal note, Mater Populi Fidelis, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF) pointed out that these terms often require frequent clarification and carry risks of overshadowing Christ’s unique redemptive ministry.

The note, approved by Pope Francis and signed by Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, emphasizes that Mary’s participation in salvation is real, unique, and incomparable—but always subordinate to Christ. The DDF urges the faithful to prefer titles based on Mary’s motherhood, such as Mother of God and Mother of the Faithful People of God, over more controversial formulations.
During the Rome presentation, the cardinal acknowledged the decision would provoke debate. Indeed, one attendee publicly objected, claiming that the title “Co-Redemptrix” has been part of Church tradition. The cardinal responded that theological developments must be handled responsibly, respecting both doctrine and sensus fidelium.
By issuing this guidance, the Vatican aims to clarify Marian devotion, avoid theological excess, and foster unity within the Church and in ecumenical dialogue.
